Sweet. I love applied geekery. Especially the literary kind.

Taking into account my limited understanding of the internal conflicts within Anglican church (mostly read from here and links from your blog), and my lesser involvement in Tolkien-geekery (countless trips through The Hobbit, three readings of LOTR and two failed teenage attempts at The Silmarillion), this seems pretty tight. I especially appreciate the equivocation of the three elven rings to nostalgic conservatism and its trappings.

I realize that, as you've said, the application isn't perfect, but I was wondering if you had anything to add on the matter of the rings created by Sauron for the other races. The elves forged theirs out of their own longing for the past, but the other races had theirs forged for them. I'm not saying that you're implying that an agent of darkness is invested in creating ideology for the left, but I can see some misguided person concievably picking that corollary out of your application. Any thoughts, or do we just chalk this one up to imperfect application?

The Ents reference was a masterful piece of propaganda. The goal of both the left and the right in this conflict is to radicalize the middle -- to make them choose sides. That both the left and the right found much to be unhappy about at GC06 makes it pretty clear that there is an effective middle who are resisting radicalization.

The effort here is to shine a diapproving eye on the refusal to take sides. Both the left and the right do it all the time.

Ches,

I'm not sure I would extend the application that far, except to say that the left is sometimes so concentrated on the immediate that they lose long-range vision.
